Have you ever wondered what it was like to listen to Jesus? To the religious elite Jesus was dangerous. The common people could not be left with him, to be influenced by him. Jesus’ opponents sent their enforcers to arrest Jesus and they came back with the words, “We have never heard anyone speak like this!” (Jn 7:46). What was it like to sit in his presence? Why would cause 5000 men to travel into a place devoid of habitation to listen to a religious teacher? Today, we struggle to get men to church. Men so taken with Jesus, they forgot about time, food, or accommodation, “Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. 36 Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.” (Mk 6:35-36). Mary forgot her family responsibilities, to the point her sister got upset, just to listen to him. Peter said, “You have the words that give eternal life” (Jn 6:68). Peter and John were recognized as having been with Jesus, even though they had certified him dead. Ordinary men with no special training in the scriptures acting and speaking with confidence (Acts 4:13). Are we seeing a window on Jesus? Matthew records, “the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law” (Mt 7:28-29). What was it like to be with Jesus? To hear him? To be caught in the crowd with him? People wanted to be with him, even if they couldn’t make sense of what he was saying. His presence oozed life. It was the life of the creator touching our reality. Jesus was the tangible presence of God. In Jesus’ presence you would feel the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, … that are evidences of the Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit in our own lives (Gal 522-23). Jesus is an incredibly attractive person. If we emulate Jesus, people will be attracted to the Jesus in us. People will resonate with their own internal longing to be with the creator. As Jesus transforms us, he will again be manifested in humanity. People will be threatened but there will a whole lot of people who will want to meet Jesus. You are Jesus to a broken world that desperately needs him.
